Now that the Spring turkey hunting season is done, I turn my attention to the coyote. The coyotes will come out of the bush now that the turkey hunters are gone and will be roaming farmers fields and following deer trails through the summer. June is a time when deer are hiding fawns in fields and farmers livestock such as calves, sheep and lambs are grazing in the pasture. The coyote is one of the main predators of these animals and use these kills to feed their young. I will be setting up a tree stand behind two farmers properties who have cattle, sheep and lambs. A bobcat was sighted in there by the farmer last winter. Great place to glass for whitetails that are making their way along the fence lines.

tracer, this subject has always had my interest. What do you use for a weapon? Do you think you could call one within longbow range? Or do you even use a call of any kind?
What about hunting them with a muzzleoader?

I use a shotgun with 00buck and hunt from a tree stand. It is legal( in WMU 76) to hunt them with a muzzle loader as long as it isn't deer season. Now as far as bow range is concerned, definitely yes. While hunting deer in bow season I've had three coyotes walk right up to my stand. I'm at a disadvantage here with the crossbow because of the horizontal challenge. I use a variety of calls including distress calls, fawn bleat, turkey calls, and scents such as doe urine. You really have to be ready for the shot with these guys because they just drift in with hardly a sound. The trick is to see him before he sees you and he will walk in to range, usually stop and look back giving you the chance to draw.
