The Firearms Act requires all gun owners to be licensed and all firearms to be registered.If your license has expired, there are three ways to obtain one legally : take the necessary courses and exams, challenge the exam, or attempt alternative certification by the Chief Firearms Office. Individuals who who possess unregistered non-restricted firearms and have a valid licence or a licence that has expired since January 1, 2004, are exempt from prosecution while taking steps to comply with current law, says Melisa Leclerc, director of communications for the Hon. Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety.
